Instructions for Shavaasana

This aasana mimicks the dead body position. It is useful to neutralise energies within your body and also can be used for spiritual healing. In order to do shavasaana you are required to lie down,so having a mat would make it comfortable.

1. Lie flat on your back, with your head straight and palms facing downwards. Feet apart by 2ft.
2. Feel the awareness of your body, the energy and for some, may even feel your blood flowing through your body. At this point you should be completely rested and should not have any form of tension or pain (unless if it is already persisted earlier). From this point, you'll pull the awareness from the bottom part of your body up to the crown of your head (sahasrara chakra). Keep your eyes closed once begun.
3. Feel the awareness moving up from your toes, up to your ankle.
4. Feel the awareness moving from your ankle, up to your calves, your knees, your thighs and up to your pelvic area.
5. Feel the awareness moving from your pelvic to your stomach, up to your chest and at your neck.
6. Now feel the awareness moving upwards from your fingers of your hands up to your wrist, arm, shoulder and merge with the rest of the awareness in your neck.
7. Pull your awareness further up, from your neck, to your face, up to your third eye (center point of your eyebrow).
8. Finally pull all of your awareness to the crown of your head. Once all the energies are accumulated on the sahasrara chakra, throw the awareness out of your body.

The feeling of awareness in your body is simply the sense and sensation. To truly loose awareness requires practice and can be perfected over time. Once your awareness is out of your body, imagine your soul is outside of your body, in the form of your awareness, lingering right above your physical body. For some, this may seem as a lost ancient art known as "Kooru vittu kooru payikirathe" or astral projection. But this is not soul removal from your body, but your awareness.

Enjoy the experience outside of your body with your eyes closed. Observe your physical body and you will also be able to look through the skin and identify parts of your body which needs healing.

When you are ready, you will bring your awareness back to your body. Steps 3 - 8 is now reversed, so you should read it as 8,7,6,5,4,3. As you bring your awareness back to your body, allow it to flow slower than
the rate it took to leave the body. This allows the energy to settle down to all parts of your body as well as allow healing as your awareness return. It is okay if you fall asleep.

The feeling that i usually get when my awareness returns is like floating on the sea. The gentle waves brushing through is the sensation i get when the awareness returns. Give it longer time to return to allow healing to happen.

Once all awareness has returned, still keep your eyes closed. Fold your left leg inwards, and gently turn to your left. Stay in that left turn position for a while, then slowly get up from your left. The reason why you do this is because since you have lied down for a while, blood flow is regularised. Turning to the left causes the heart to start pumping faster as you need blood up to your brains when you get up, to avoid "blacking out". Once you are seated, still with your eyes closed, thank your Gurus for guidance given and slowly open your eyes.
